Wedding Belles

I had never really thought of what kind of wedding dress I wanted. I had never thought of what wedding I wanted to be honest. I was never one of those girls who obsessed over ever frilly detail and knew the exact requirements before I had even found Mr Right.

Given I was marrying in Italy, I decided on something old style Italian and based my dress ideas around vintage Sofia Loren. Vintage but classic.

The dress is such a huge and personal decision. It’s worn for one day and looked at in photos forever more. The dress choice required a lot more decision-making and dedication than I had ever imagined! Couldn’t I just wear my jeans and flip-flops?

As an only child I couldn’t do my mum out of the privilege of seeing me dressed like a bride and although I made a fuss at the dress fittings because I felt like a transvestite in fancy dress, I actually did feel really special on the day.

Here are a few of the ideas I came up with and styles that I liked, from my Pinterest board, La Mia Bella Matrimonio.

Absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE the fish tail silohette on this Oscar de la Renta dress and the veil is just stunning! Foto

I’m not one for massively long trains but as usual Style Me Pretty have come up trumps with this just right lace train, dress by Donna McMahon.  The back is beautiful for a summer wedding and bronze exposed skin but do avoid if there is an ever so tiny hint of a back boob! Thats not a good look for backless dresses, especially on your wedding day! Foto

Again, Elegant Elegant Elegant Love Love Love! This style of dress is ideal for any woman wanting to show off an hour glass figure. Foto

Im not one for getting my arms out! Let it be said, there is nothing hollywood vintage glamour about a bingo wing is there?! I am also not heavenly endowed in the cleavage department so whilst the arms on this dress are perfect for me, the sweetheart boobie affair is not.  Still, im totally in love with Italian lace so with a bit of tweaking, this idea was top of my list! Foto

So with a few drawings and a bit of dabbling in lace and cotton thread, I came up with some ideas that would fit my Sofia Loren style, vintage Italian wedding dress theme a treat.  Keep up with the next post to found out what “the dress” turned out like!

Puffball or pleats, basque or bodice, wedding dresses are a personal choice.  What does yours say about you?  Do share!

Italian Women: Style Guru?

Yesterday I was Skyping my sister-in-law to confirm that she has a push chair for me to borrow next week when we touch down in Venice town.

I haven’t seen her for a while as she has been at her in-laws beach house in the South of Italy. I was horrified!

There she was all tanned and brown as a berry, all slim and svelte, not a hair out of place and wearing a beautiful cerise pink summer dress. There I was, all white and pasty, still in my pajamas, yesterday’s mascara had slid to my cheek and my hair hadn’t seen a brush for days!

Oh dear Lord! What am I to do? I’ve got a week to wax, EVERYTHING, pedicure, manicure, hair died, eyebrows done, skin scrubbed, fake baked and dig out any item of summer clothing I have that 1) fits me thirteen months after giving birth and 2) isn’t black. It’s a task but for the sake of vanity I’m up for the challenge. Think Susan Boyle meets Sofia Loren!

This is it, you see, Sofia Loren, she’s a icon; beautiful, classy, stylish, sexy. She’s Italian. Italian women just have it.  Dont they?

Here are a few effortlessly stylish signorinas from my Pinterest board La Mia Bella Moda showing us how Italian fashion, street style, is done.

Love this yellow dress and colouful shoes.  I would definitely need a tan for this outfit! foto.

The shoes.  Elegant.  Nude.  Loving a nude shoe these days but again, doesnt look great with pasty white legs – tan me up! foto.

Now I happen to know that this little number is Dolce & Gabbana.  Its a classic and teamed up with flats and 50’s sunnies, this is right up my strada! foto.

Again, flat embellished shoes go so great with this pretty dress.  Got to get me some jewelled flats! foto.

Imagine looking this cool when youre in your lounge gear! Italian style is most certainly in the genes. foto.

This is my favourite! I’m not too into tattoos (I dont have any) but I love the dress, the hat, the flat shoes and i even love the tatty cotton bracelets.  This girl just oozes cool, chatting on a street corner.  Belissima! foto.

You see what I’m up against!! Wish me luck.

Lets Go Shwopping!

Readers who live in the UK will have heard about Marks & Spencer’s new campaign called “Shwopping”.

When you spend £35 on clothing, home and beauty products in M&S stores and online and you donate an item of your own clothing, you get £5 off your bill.  Not a bad swap!  You can donate any brand of clothing, it doesn’t have to have been bought from M&S.  If you’re not buying anything, you can still donate old clothes by simply dropping them in one of the Shwop Boxes dotted around the stores.   Meanwhile, Marks & Spencer have teamed up with Oxfam who are benefitting from receiving the clothes and will be shipping them globally to those in need.

Last weekend, whilst on a trek around town, I accidentally stumbled across the Marks & Spencer Shwop Lab. I wondered what on earth all these clothes were doing hanging outside the building and when I got closer I realised what it was.

Did you know that we throw away 10,000 garments to land fill ever five minutes. That us an incredible one billion garments to land in the UK alone each year. Discarded clothes, usually in great condition, that other people would be greatly for.  M&S are urging the nation to take part in this ‘buy one / give one’ appeal.

Here are a few pics that I took to share with you:

Clothes on the floor, walls, trees, everywhere!

A clothes bicycle, a clothes bench, even a clothes dog!

Don’t Ditch it! Shwop it!

Can you believe someone Shwopped this gorgeous party dress?

Pretty bold: Change the World, SHWOP!

There really are some quite amazing charity events going on in London at the moment.  If you don’t live in London, or the UK for that matter, but still want to get involved, contact a local store with the idea and see if you can run your own Shwopping event for Oxfam! If you do… let me know!! I’d love to hear about it.
