Due to my pregnancy being so far ahead, I was sent for an emergency scan. As I had not had a menstrual cycle for almost two years, there was no way of knowing for sure what date we should be expecting our bundle to arrive.
We went along to the hospital, with Bambina, and were gently ushered into the sonographers room. She explained the formalities, which of course we already knew, and asked if I could wiggle my bottom onto the bed.
The cold gel was smothered across my lower stomach and like Harry Potter, the sonographer used her wand to create a little spell of magic. There it was! Our second miracle with mouth open, hands up waving, heart beating, legs kicking. Alive and well ready for the world to see.
Bambina pointed at the screen and said “Babba!”. The Italian desperately looked to see if he could notice the sex whilst I insisted that the sonographer point her wand in any direction other than the baby’s nether region. As with Bambina, we had decided not to find out. This baby was a gift and all gifts are supposed to be wrapped until they are meant to be opened. Not finding out.
The sonographer measured the head, the brain, the limbs, checked the heart was beating properly and confirmed that all looks well. We both breathed a sigh of relief and watched as our new addition let out what looked like a huge yawn! It had clearly been a busy week for her or him too.
When we got home I studied the picture. It was real after all. I wasn’t going to wake up and it had all been a dream. This baby was there, breathing, eating and sleeping, cozy in its little bubble. For the first time I felt like I had to protect it. I was washed over with motherly instinct as I looked at that little person. Like a little bird, all see-through and vulnerable. My baby needs me.
That’s it now, your ours, and we will love, care and protect you with all our might! Welcome to our family little one.
A few days later, the Italian received a call to confirm that he had been offered a job that he had been interviewing for for two and a half months. It’s been a long time coming and there is no-one more happy or relieved than him.
My mum was right. Our situation has worked itself out and everything has started to come together.
Alls we need to do now is sit back and enjoy watching our new addition grow.
Here’s looking at you kid!
